Shawn: (walking in the door) Your back is bothering you I can tell…hey did you make meatballs?
Me: Yea.
Shawn: God you’re awesome. I don’t care what anyone else says about you.
Me: Thanks. Hey, I’m dyeing my hair blue.
Shawn: Are you making garlic bread with that? I’ll put it in the oven. I don’t want you bending over and hurting yourself more. Wait. What?
Me: I’m dyeing my hair blue.
Shawn: Ummm…ok. Is this some sort of “hey I’m on my period” talk?
Me: (ramming him in ribs) No. Remember I did a bunch of posts last week to help raise awareness for National Suicide Prevention?
Shawn: Yes.
Me: Well a bunch of bloggers are going to try and raise 5,000 dollars for the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention. If we do, we’re going blue!
Shawn: Your hair?
Me: Yes. All of us.
Shawn: Are you on your period? Did you take your medication today? Should I be calling Dr.B? You’ve never done anything like this.
Me: I know. But I need to. Remember what happened to us in the spring? Look at how far we’ve come. People need to know that there is hope and that they can get better with help.Â
Shawn: You seriously want to do this?
Me:Â Yes.
Shawn:Â You’re not on your period right now are you? Â (Receiving jab to groin) I’m kidding. I’m kidding. You know I’m behind you all the way. Love you babe.
Me: Even if I’m blue?
Shawn: Even if you’re blue.
Last week during National Suicide Prevention Week, a fellow blogger Cristi of Motherhood Unadorned dyed her hair blue after raising over $1,600 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She’s a survivor of suicide and is very passionate about the cause, so much so she inspired others to join her effort and get blue streaks when she reached her goal. Check out photos of some of the #bluebloggers!
I was also inspired.
So I’ve decided to help take her team’s suicide prevention fundraising to the next level. As of today, Team Purposeful Practices/Motherhood Unadorned has raised over $2,100. If they reach $5,000 by their Out of the Darkness Walk in Seattle on October 1st I’m dyeing my hair with chunky BLUE STREAKS … along with other blogger friends.

Mental illness has punched its way through my family for the last 3 years.
I’m taking a stand along with these other awesome bloggers against these illnesses that affects thousands of people each day. Over 35,000 people in the U.S. alone die each year by suicide, and worldwide it’s estimated at one million lives lost. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is at the forefront of research, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide.
So please if you can spare even $1, donate today HERE to any member of Cristi’s team!Â
Your donation is 100% tax deductible and you’ll get me closer to blue!
I KNOW you want to see that. Don’t worry, there will be lots of photos.

I think it’s awesome that you’re doing this. Blue hair will look great on you

Love the period assumptions.
Blue in colour is so much better than blue in spirit. Everything is fixable and it’s the struggle that makes you stronger. You are a person to be looked up to.
